A CMM-4 Unit Commissioned in Liberia

In the middle of August this year, representatives of GlobeCore visited Liveria, where they commissioned a CMM-4 unit. The commissioning process included operator training.

The unit is installed on a trailer for easy transportation to the location of serviced transformers. The unit was first started at one of the local hydropower plants. Trials included operation of the CMM-4 in all modes:

  • Oil degassing. In this mode oil was purified with removal of solid particles, water and gas;
  • Oil heating;
  • Pulling vacuum on power transformers. Note that the unit can evacuate not only transformers, but other equipment as well.

The unit performed well in all modes without exception. To receive advice or place an order, please use one of the contacts in the corresponding website page.

The New CMM-1CF for Purification of Oil with Very High Water Content

GlobeCore has successfully completed the final trials of the CMM-1CF unit with the processing rate of 1 m3/hour in May.

The primary mission of this product is not only filtration, but also removal of water from industrial oil. The unit can process oil with water content of 50% and more. The CMM-1CF can process diesel fuel, kerosene, petroleum, heating oil and other petrochemical products with high water contamination.

The unit is based on a fairly simple principle of coagulation. Oil passes through a special filter, where molecules of water form droplets and flow on the surface of the filter into a settling vessel, from which the water can be drained through a valve. To extend the life of the pump and the main coalescing filter, the unit is equipped with a cartridge filter (with the possible filtration rating of 1, 3, 5 or 25 μm).

The СММ-1CF has the following advantages:

  • low power consumption;
  • mobility;
  • compact size;
  • simple operation and servicing;
  • no heating or chemical influence on the processed oil.

Colombia hosted an international exhibition Feria Internacional del Sector Eléctrico 2017

The exhibition Feria Internacional del Sector Eléctrico was established in 2006 and every two years brings together representatives of the electrical industry of Latin America and guests from other countries.

This year GlobeCore took advantage of the opportunity and took part in this event, which was held in Medellin (Colombia). From November 29 to December 1, the participants and visitors of the exhibition could appreciate the technologies of our company presented at a separate stand in the exhibition hall. The stand exhibited an example of compact and mobile equipment for processing of transformer oils – a CMM-0,6 unit.

GlobeCore held a seminar  for the guests of Feria Internacional del Sector Eléctrico 2017 wishing to learn more about our technologies of oil regeneration and their applications in restoration of industrial oils. the seminar was attended by representatives of Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Perú, El Salvador, Panama and other countries.

We would like to note the high level of organization of the exhibition. All three days passed in an interesting communication with participants and visitors, which allowed our company to establish new and existing business contacts in Latin America.

СММ-2,2 project was executed in Italy

September 17, GlobeCore started up and tested a CMM-2.2 unit in Foligno (Umbria), Italy.

This time, the startup and commissioning were carried out on site of a large locomotive manufacturer in Italy.

Italian railers use silicone oil in their locomotive transformers. The oil mostly consists of silicon atoms, its name comes from Latin “silicium” (silicon). This feature gives silicon oil the following characteristics:

  • stable temperature;
  • good heat transfer;
  • resistance to ignition.

Before every purification, it is necessary to ensure:

  • the unit is washed from the remains of the previous oil;
  • the filter elements are replaced;
  • vacuum column activator filters are replaced.

The tests showed CMM-2,2 purifying both mineral and silicone oils equally well.

Representative of Lube Team Hydraulic Antonio Pisaniello highly commended the work of our company representatives: “We were present at the commissioning of the equipment for filtration of silicone oil for railway locomotive 402B of Ansaldo / Hitachi to in Foligno. The start up was successful. I am satisfied with the work done. I thank you and until the next time”

We are also grateful to our Italian colleagues and look forward to further cooperation.

Transformer Tap Changers

tap changers

Power transformers convert one voltage to another without changing frequency. The main parameter of transformer is transformation ratio, i.e. the ratio between primary and secondary coil voltages or the number of turns in the windings. To change transformation ratio, a tap changer is used, which changes the number of turns engaged at a given moment. Such devices allow keeping nominal voltage in the coils, if the primary or secondary voltage deviates from the setting. Tap changers operate with the transformer under load.

Tap changer oil system

There are two design types of tap changers depending on the oil system features. In the first case, the contactor of the changer is located in a separate tank on a insulator, while in the second case, the assembly is submerged, when the device is installed either inside the transformer tank or in a separate tank. The oil functions as an arc extinguisher; arcing may occur when the contactor is engaged.

For normal tap changer operation the temperature of the upper oil layers must not drop below -20 ⁰С. If the tank is separate, a special heating system is used to maintain the required oil temperature.

Frequent arcs degrade the oil’s quality. Heating of contactors, which occurs when transit resistance increases, further aggravates the problem. For best performance of the tap changer oil, its dielectric strength must be at least 30-40 kV with moisture content below 0.003%. Other tap changer oil parameters (color, acidity, carbon content) are of less importance and do not influence usability of the liquid in the contactor tank. Moisture content and dielectric strength are measured in oil samples taken every 5000 switches, but at least once a year.

The level of oil in the tank can be seen in the oil indicator. If the level is not maintained, arc burning time increases significantly, which should be avoided.

When selecting tap changer oil, viscosity must also be considered. If the oi lis too thick, the contactor must overcome higher mechanical resistance during switching, which may lead to failure in the long run.

Tap changer oil service life extension

If the analysis indicates that at least one of the parameters is out of specifications (moisture content or dielectric strength), the oil in the tap changer tank must be changed. However, frequent oil changes is not viable economically, which makes oil processing to dehydrate it and increase dielectric strength for oil reuse a reasonable alternative. This task is handled well by GlobeCore CMM-0.6 unit, which performs degassing and dehydration of tap changer oil with the processing rate of 600 liters per hour. This capacity is quite sufficient for servicing of the oil system.

The СММ-0.6 offers the following advantages:

  • increasing dielectric strength to 60 kV;
  • reduction of moisture content to below 10 ppm;
  • a special system to prevent foaming, which is highly probable when processing oil with high moisture content;
  • oil leak sensor. If a leak occurs, the unit automatically stops and notifies the operator;
  • silent operation;
  • powered by a regular power socket.
